Viscosity Casting Resin Offers Production Advantage to
Prototype/Model Producer EASTON, PA - The recent introduction of Smooth-Cast 300, an ultra-low viscosity urethane casting resin, has given model-makers around the world a new tool for producing fast castings that are virtually bubble-free. SC300 offers the convenience of a one-to-one mix ratio (by volume - no scale required) and mixes/pours like water. Unlike other casting resins, this material does not need to be vacuumed prior to casting. This resin does not contain mercury and costs less than comparable resins. Dreams To Reality Studios, Inc. (DTR) is a professional model making and design company located in King Of Prussia, PA that specializes in prototyping, moldmaking and casting. They were recently awarded a contract to produce a limited edition 14-inch gorilla model that posed a challenge because of the original’s severe undercuts and extreme detail. Twenty finished reproductions were due in a few day’s time and cost was also an important factor. DTR made a rubber mold of the original using Smooth-Sil 910 silicone rubber, also manufactured by Smooth-On. The rubber was poured over the model and allowed to cure. After demolding, the ultra-low viscosity of Smooth-Cast 300 (100 centipoise) ensured that all undercuts and detail of the model were replicated perfectly without bubbles, thereby eliminating the need for any post finishing. DTR President Michael Kryger states that, "We were in a real time crunch and the SC300 allowed us to cycle through and complete the project quickly. We’re now using it for a variety of applications and recommending it to our clients. It is the best fast cast resin on the market today."
